Fannie Mae’s Q4 2017 Mortgage Lender Sentiment Survey reported a negative profit margin outlook. The belief that “competition from other lenders” will hit profits have touched a new high in the last quarter of this financial year. Three-fourths lenders now concur to this view compared to one-third two years ago. Other reasons cited for the negative outlook include consumer demand, staffing, and market trend changes. The one thing that this survey unmistakably points to is that mortgage lenders’ business strategies in 2018 will be shaped by increased competition.
